CONCRETE SWIMMING POOLS – MYTHS & FACTS

HOME SWIMMING POOLS FACTS * Fibreglass swimming pools sellers want you to buy fibreglass pools. * Concrete swimming pools sellers want you to buy concrete pools.

Each will tell you the things which they hope will make you buy their product. Usually by emphasising only their product’s good points.

DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT! USE YOUR DISCRETION AND JUDGEMENT TO SIFT THE MYTHS FROM THE FACTS. DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU’RE TOLD.  EVEN HERE!  ASK QUESTIONS UNTIL THE ANSWERS SATISFY YOU.

CONCRETE OR FIBREGLASS? So long as they’re made or built by people who know what they’re doing and so can produce a good quality product, then . . . .

HERE OR THERE? Fibreglass pools can usually only be installed in fairly flat areas. Concrete pools can be installed almost anywhere – even on the side of a hill or most any awkward spot.

WHAT DO THEY COST? Fibreglass pools are usually a little more expensive than concrete, for the same volume of water that you get to swim in.

The bigger a concrete pool is, the cheaper it gets per cubic metre of water that you have to swim in. (Really difficult sites are excluded, but they’re sites where a fibreglass pool would be impossible, anyway.)

ROUGH OR SMOOTH? By their very name, Fibreglass pools can be as smooth as glass. Concrete pools can be made almost the same, with careful finishing. They can even be tiled to be as smooth as your shower walls.

STRONG OR STRONGER? Fibreglass pools are made of a resin and fibreglass matting. Concrete pools are reinforced with steel. The amount of steel reinforcing is determined by a Structural Engineer. Remember that concrete pool walls are 200mm thick. Fibreglass pool walls are just 20 – 30 mm thick. No skyscrapers are built of fibreglass!

WHAT IF THERE’S AN EARTHQUAKE? Neither fibreglass nor concrete swimming pools escape the nasty consequences of a huge quake. If your fibreglass or concrete pool does break up in a severe quake, it will be the least of your worries because your home is likely to be in ruins.

WHAT ABOUT CRACKING? Fibreglass pools can crack, just as anything can – but it all depends on the circumstances.

Concrete pools are reinforced with steel, just like skyscrapers. A competently designed, engineered and properly built concrete pool will NOT crack in normal circumstances.

HOW SOON CAN WE SWIM? Pools of either type take time to plan and construct. Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the summer heat arrives.

WHAT ABOUT DURABILITY? Fibreglass pools do last quite well, but not as long as concrete.

Concrete pools are extremely durable. They can almost last forever, if they are properly built by a tradesman who knows his job!

SALT VERSUS CHLORINE? Concrete pools which are built properly endure equally or longer than fibreglass with either salt or chlorine anti-algae water treatment.

BIG OR SMALL? Concrete pools can be made to any size. Have you ever seen a school or council swimming pool that was NOT made of concrete?
